Masters Blend Tung Oil

Alternative Views:

Tung oil has been recognized for centuries as the finest of oil finishes. It produces a tough, hard, surface that is absolutely waterproof, abrasion resistant and non-toxic. Tung oil penetrates wood fibers enhancing both grain and color. It will not yellow as linseed oil finishes do. Tung oil is revered by craftsmen for its warm, hand rubbed look. Masters Blend Tung oil has a light honey color and a nutty aroma. Tung oil is naturally non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

Masters Blend Tung Oil-100% Pure™ has zero VOC’s (volotile organic compounds). VOC’s contribute to health problems, smog and noxious odors. Masters Blend is recommended by Green Reports - pdf. Tung oil is naturally polymerizing and cures by oxidation, not evaporation. Tung oil is FDA approved for food contact FDA Reference. Thinners can be added to increase penetration and accelerate the drying time. Citrus solvent is a thinner made from orange peels and can be used to maintain the non-toxic qualities. Although Tung oil takes a bit longer to dry than commercial finishes, craftsmen agree that the superior results are worth the wait.

Tung oil is the easiest finish to repair. Simply rub damaged area with 0000-steel wool and apply more Tung oil.

Customers who return for Masters Blend Tung Oil include:

  • Homeowners, to seal hardwood floors without the look of a thick plastic film.

  • Homeowners who want a safer alternative finish for outdoor decks and furniture.
  • Persons with sensitivities to solvents, thinners, and dryers, for use on floors and panels.
  • Wood turners who use the heat of the lathe to spin the oil into the grain.
  • Masons who apply Tung oil to stone, brick and concrete.
  • Homeowners who mix it with 5 parts Naptha to duplicate expensive granite counter sealer.
  • Those who insist on 100% pure Tung Oil under a coat of shellac as the ultimate finish.
  • “Old Timers” who mix their own secret finishes (see example in Directions).

Directions:

Apply with a brush or a soft, lint free cloth. Allow to penetrate for 10 minutes, then wipe off excess and allow 24 hours to dry. Buff with 0000 steel wool for a satin sheen. Use several coats for added protection. Allow each coat to dry another 24 hours and follow with steel wool. For a glossy finish, allow oil to dry, then use paste wax and buff.

Old Timer’s Finish: Mix 2 parts Tung oil with 1 part oil varnish (use either Alkyd glossy or Polyurethane glossy) and 1 part thinner (citrus solvent, turpentine or mineral spirits). A few drops of "Japan Drier" per quart will speed the drying process. This finish can be built to a thicker glossier and harder surface with additional coats.

Sam Maloof style Finish: Mix 2 parts Tung oil with one part glossy varnish. Wipe on, wipe off. Recommended for fine pieces of furniture with a hand rubbed look. Leaves a very thin silky finish on finely sanded surfaces.

For your Safety:
Keep containers tightly closed away from extreme temperature changes and open flames. Oil-soaked rags, steel wool or waste soaked with oil may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. This is true of all naturally drying oils. Immediately after use, place the oil soaked material in a sealed water-filled metal container or hang outside separately to dry.
